waterproof vs water repellent finishes
What is the difference between fabric waterproof and water repellent?
Water-repellent fabrics are textiles specifically designed to resist water penetration to a certain extent. They are not completely waterproof, but are treated with a DWR (Durable waterproof) coating that encourages water droplets to roll off the surface of the material. However, it is important to note that prolonged exposure to water will eventually cause the fabric to saturate, thus compromising its effectiveness.
Waterproof fabrics, on the other hand, are designed to completely prevent water penetration. These fabrics are usually made of special materials, such as laminated PU, TPU, PTFE, or coated to prevent water penetration. Waterproof fabrics are commonly used in applications where water resistance is critical, such as raincoats, tents, and outdoor gear. It is worth noting that while waterproof fabrics are very effective at preventing water penetration, they may not be as breathable as DWR fabrics. In order to ensure maximum comfort, it is important to choose the right fabric for the intended use and conditions.
